Japan's Research on the Sino-U.S.Strategic Competition:Theoretical Perspectives,Issue Focus and Strategic Choices
摘要
Abstract
The Sino-U.S.strategic competition has become a focal topic in contemporary Japan's international relations scholarship. At the theoretical level,Japanese scholars commonly employ power transition theory to explain the structural origins of the Sino-U.S.strategic competition, and adopt collective defense theory to analyze the relationship between the Sino-U.S.rivalry and adjustments in the U.S.-led alliance system in the Asia-Pacific.In addition, pivotal state theory and Three Worlds theory are used to highlight the strategic positions of Japan and the"Global South"within the context of the Sino-U.S.competition.In terms of research topics,Japanese scholars primarily focus on the stages of the Sino-U.S.strategic competition, its implications for the international order, and its impact on the strategic configuration of the Asia-Pacific region.Regarding Japan's strategic choices amid the Sino-U.S.rivalry,Japanese academic circles have produced several representative perspectives, including the"alignment with partners to constrain China"approach, the argument for enhancing Japan's regional shaping capacity, and proposals for constructing a new type of China-Japan relations. This article argues that many Japanese academic studies on China exhibit obvious cognitive biases, which can be attributed to the close interaction between government and academia, the structural dependence of Japan's national strategy on the United States and a sense of psychological imbalance among Japanese elites in response to China's rise.关键词
