Imagination of Reverence for the Zhou Dynasty and the Tributary Mindset:On Sacrifice to Yi-Qi and Cognition of Yi-Qi from the Perspective of Scholars in Joseon Dynasty
摘要
Abstract
The construction and worship of the Yi-Qi Temple initially emerged from spontaneous popular practices before being officially included in the imperial sacrificial canon after the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty.During the Ming and Qing dynasties, diplomatic envoys of the Joseon Dynasty frequently traveled to Beijing, during which time the Qingsheng Temple in Yongping Prefecture and the story of Yi-Qi became widely known among scholars in Joseon Dynasty.Under the tributary relationship and diplomatic policy of flunkeyism, the rulers and officials of Joseon Dynasty drew inspiration from and reinforced the moral exemplarity of Bo Yi and Shu Qi,venerating them as symbols of loyalty, integrity, and the cardinal virtues. The enthusiasm for Yi-Qi worship in Joseon Dynasty can be attributed to superficial reasons such as the change in the tributary route leading the envoys to discover, visit, and worship the Yi-Qi Temple. However,at a deeper level,it stems from the scholars'iden-tification with Chinese culture based on their imagination of reverence for the Zhou Dynasty and their tributary mindset,as well as their recognition of the Central Plain dynasties as the legitimate authority of the world.关键词
