Path to Irish Spiritual Liberation in The Dead:A Perspective of Homi K.Bhabha's Theories

Abstract
As Joseph Frank,the author of Spatial Form in Modern Literature,put it,"Joyce cannot be read—he can only be re-read."The classics of the modernist master James Joyce continuously summon new theoretical interpretive perspectives and reveal fresh connotations.This paper revisits his short story masterpiece The Dead through the lens of Homi K.Bhabha's postcolonial and ethical theories developed over the past three decades,uncovering the hidden intellectual journey of the young Joyce as he explores a path toward the spiritual liberation of Ireland.In the early twentieth century,against the backdrop of the booming Irish War of Inde-pendence and the Irish Literary Revival,Joyce,by denouncing the xenophilous path from an internalized colonialist perspective and the xenophobic reactionary path of tribal nationalism in The Dead,breaks down binary paradigms and introduces the path of new birth-the path of hybridism agglomerating inheritance and opening-up.This discovery produces a new interpretation of the story,enriches the mutual learning scenarios between Chinese and Irish civilizations,which share similar historical contexts and developmental aspirations,and provides a reference for China's current commitment to reform and opening-up and its"culture going global"strategy:namely,inheritance must transcend tradition,and openness should never lead to the loss of oneself.关键词
