Abstract

In the static analysis of tensegrity structures,conventional finite element methods have difficulty accurately characterizing the tension-compression asymmetric mechanical behavior caused by the compressive slackening of flexible cables.This nonsmooth characteristic may lead to abrupt changes in member stiffness as the stress state switches,thereby reducing the convergence of iterative calculations.Therefore,it is necessary to establish and solve accurate equilibrium equations that account for the constitutive relationship of bimodular materials,so as to achieve reliable static analysis of such structures.Non-smooth statics equations of tensegrity structures were derived incorporating constitutive relations of components,using nodal coordinates as generalized coordinate vectors;these equations can be reduced to the traditional finite element formulation.The core of the method lies in transforming the calculation of nodal displace-ment into the solution of a linear complementarity problem,enabling static analysis of tensegrity structures with arbitrary prestress within an acceptable error range.Results indicate that slackening in the main structural cables increases the centroid variation by 2.83%,while the internal forces in the bars and cables rise by 1.50%and 2.58%,respectively,thereby accelerating component failure.Slackened cables,the equilibrium configuration,and the internal force distribu-tion after deformation are successfully predicted by the present approach,which provides a solid theoretical basis for ac-curate mechanical analysis and design of tensegrity structures.
