Rurality of Traditional Village Public Spaces in the Context of Culture-tourism Development:A Comparative Study of Gangtou Village and Langtou Village in Guangzhou
摘要
Abstract
With the implementation of the ongoing rural revitalization strategy, cultural tourism development and spatial improvement have increasingly become major approaches to the conservation and revitalization of traditional villages.Cultural tourism development not only promotes the physical landscape improvement of traditional villages but also leads to divergent rurality:after the introduction of tourism functions, villagers'daily lives in some villages remain integrated with cultural tourism activities, thus sustaining the rurality in public spaces.Villagers'daily practices in other villages gradually withdraw from traditional public spaces as tourism functions intensify, thereby weakening rurality. With the acceleration of urban-rural factor flows and the continued advancement of cultural tourism development, changes in rurality are increasingly reflected in shifts in users, modes of use,and the spatial order of public spaces.Existing studies have recognized the ongoing construction of rurality from the perspectives of social construction and everyday practice, and have also examined the morphological evolution and functional transformation of public spaces in traditional villages under cultural tourism development.Yet,how the relationship between tourism functions and daily life functions within public spaces affects the continuation or weakening of rurality still needs to be further interpreted. To address this issue, the concept of"relational order"is introduced based on Halfacree's three-fold model of rural space, and public spaces in traditional villages are understood as fields shaped by the interaction of three logics:rural locality, rural representation, and rural daily life.Particular attention is paid to their interactions and degree of coordination in public spaces.Rural locality mainly corresponds to the spatial form and functional attributes of public spaces;rural representation refers to how planning, policy, and promotional narratives define the meanings and uses of public spaces;and rural daily life refers to local villagers'actual use of public spaces and cultural practices.Gangtou Village and Langtou Village in Huadu District,Guangzhou, were chosen as the comparison cases. These two villages are highly comparable in spatial structure and social foundation, and both have recently undergone significant cultural tourism development and public space renewal. However, they differ significantly in their development models and renewal paths.Participant observation,semi-structured interviews, and textual analysis are used to examine morphological and functional evolution, daily use states, and actor interactions in the core public spaces of the two villages. The results show that during the comprehensive development of Gangtou Village, the rural representation dominated the operational logic of public space to a considerable extent through functional replacement and discursive reconstruction. The users served by traditional public spaces shifted from villagers to tourists.Villagers in core public spaces increasingly became service providers, and daily practices were relocated to the new village area.Rural locality, rural representation, and rural daily life tended to become separated. As a result, public space presented a"disordered"state, and rurality was weakened.By contrast,Langtou Village followed a village collective-led and patchwork-embedding development path.Adjustments in rural representation did not breach the daily-life boundary of core public spaces.Villagers continued to participate in and use public spaces in most cases as subjects of daily life.Daily practices and tourist activities coexisted, and the three logics remained relatively coordinated, resulting in the"ordered"state of public space and sustaining the rurality. Therefore, whether rural locality, rural representation, and villagers'daily life can form a stable relational order within public spaces after cultural-tourism development constitutes an important mechanism affecting the continuous generation of rurality in traditional villages. The conservation and revitalization of traditional villages should focus on the continuation of daily practices and the maintenance of relational balance in public spaces, preventing simple shifts that turn them into display and consumption sites, thereby enabling them to support social interaction, rituals, and the daily lives of villagers.关键词
