Urban-rural green space and tourism industry development:Empirical evidence based on the"inverted U"relationship
摘要
Abstract
Exploring the interactive mechanism between urban-rural green spaces and the tourism industry is of great significance for advancing high-quality economic development. As the tourism industry evolves in depth, the early extensive development model has exceeded environmental carrying capacity.Ecological issues stemming from the one-sided pursuit of economic gains have become a constraint on its sustainable development.Ecological civilization construction encompasses carbon reduction, pollution control, green expansion, and growth. As a core carrier,urban-rural green spaces cover vegetation-covered areas across urban and rural domains, integrating the functions of purification and conservation, leisure services, and consumption driving. They serve as a pivotal support for the healthy development of the tourism industry.Consequently, clarifying the correlation between the two and exploring synergistic paths is an inevitable requirement for achieving a win-win scenario between ecology and industry.Existing studies exhibit three limitations.Firstly, research on green spaces has focused on urban areas while neglecting rural regions, failing to construct an integrated urban-rural indicator system.Secondly, most analyses of their relationship remain confined to linear frameworks, lacking empirical tests on non-linear relationships(e.g.,the inverted U-shape)and their underlying drivers, with insufficient robustness verification.Thirdly, water resource endowment, fiscal environmental protection expenditure, and digital industrialization have not been incorporated into the analytical framework, leaving the synergistic effects of multiple factors underexplored. This study innovates in three aspects.Firstly,it establishes a dual-dimensional indicator system for urban-rural green spaces:the urban dimension includes five indicators such as the green coverage rate of built-up areas, while the rural dimension comprises seven indicators such as forestry land area, comprehensively reflecting regional green space quality.Secondly, based on panel data of 31 provinces from 2008 to 2021,it empirically tests the non-linear relationship between the two, integrating U-tests,endogeneity tests, and multiple rounds of robustness tests to ensure the reliability of conclusions.Thirdly,it designates water resource endowment and fiscal environmental protection expenditure as mediating variables, and digital industrialization as a moderating variable,to dissect the influence paths of multiple factors.Drawing on panel data of 31 Chinese provinces from 2008 to 2021,this study constructs indicators for urban-rural green space quality and tourism industry development levels using the entropy method and entropy-TOPSIS method. In terms of model specification,a two-way fixed effects model is adopted for benchmark regression.A quadratic term is introduced to verify the inverted U-shaped relationship, and the influence mechanisms of water resource endowment, fiscal environmental protection expenditure, and digital industrialization are systematically explored.Empirical results reveal a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between the two, with an inflection point of 0.300.When the index is below 0.300,green spaces promote tourism development by attracting visitors through their ecological and leisure functions. When exceeding 0.300,they transform into an inhibitory factor due to low development efficiency and tourist aesthetic fatigue.Among the samples,78.57%have not crossed the inflection point, and only seven provinces(accounting for 22.58%)were in the inhibitory stage in 2021.Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the inverted U-shaped relationship is more pronounced in eastern regions, areas with high-level green spaces, and regions with low-level tourism industries. In contrast, the relationship is weaker or even absent in central and western regions, areas with low-level green spaces, and regions with high-level tourism industries.Regarding the influence mechanism, water resource endowment and fiscal environmental protection expenditure play mediating roles. An inverted U-shaped relationship exists between urban-rural green spaces and water resource endowment:in the early stage, green spaces conserve water resources;in the later stage, excessive water consumption by massive plant reproduction surpasses the water conservation capacity, leading to a decline in water resources.Meanwhile, the purification function of green spaces can substitute for part of environmental protection inputs, reducing the demand for fiscal environmental protection expenditure. These two factors affect the tourism industry by supporting tourism attractions and improving public services, respectively.Digital industrialization exerts a"reversing"effect:in the early stage,it inhibits tourism due to lagging integration and high costs;in the later stage,it reduces reliance on green spaces through new formats such as"e-sports+tourism",thereby promoting tourism development and transforming the inverted U-shape into a U-shape.Further regional analysis shows that digital industrialization in eastern regions has flattened the inverted U-shaped relationship;central regions exhibit a U-shaped relationship after regulation;and in western regions, the moderating effect is not significant due to low digitalization levels. This study enriches research on the interaction between ecology and tourism.Regions can formulate targeted policies based on their own green space levels, providing practical references for ecological protection and tourism industry development.关键词
