Abstract

Integrating blind number theory with the matter-element extension model for river health as-sessment effectively addresses the limitations of using these models independently,thereby providing ro-bust mathematical support for evaluating the health of complex river ecosystems.In this study,four typi-cal rivers in the Xiaojiang River basin were selected for case study,and a river health assessment system,integrating the two approaches,was constructed.The assessment included 14 indicators from five aspects:hydrological and water resources,habitat structure,water environment,aquatic organisms,and social ser-vice functions.Water and biological samples were collected at 13 sampling points in the four rivers:Xiao-jiang(XJ),Lijiang(LJ),Sanchenghe(SCH),and Xiaojiangshui(XJS).The river health assessment results obtained using the integrated system were then compared with those obtained by using the traditional mat-ter-element extension model and the comprehensive assessment model.Results indicate that Xiaojiang,Li-jiang,Sanchenghe,and Xiaojiangshui rivers in the Xiaojiang River basin ranged from healthy to very healthy,but presented a deteriorating trend.From the five aspects perspective,the water environment indi-cators of all four rivers were in sub-healthy or unhealthy conditions,with 66.67%of the water environ-ment indicators falling into a sub-healthy condition or worse.Water eutrophication and low dissolved oxy-gen were the primary factors affecting river health.The evaluation results were generally consistent with those obtained from the traditional matter-element extension model and the comprehensive evaluation model,and with the findings from on-site expert inspections.Therefore,the river health assessment mod-el,which integrates blind number theory with the matter-element extension method is reliable in practical applications and can provide technical support for the health assessment and governance of the Xiaojiang River basin.
