The Impact of Upward Social Comparison on Academic Involution Behavior:The Mediating Role of Psychological Resilience and the Moderating Role of Self-Esteem

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the impact of upward social comparison on college students'academic involution behavior,as well as the underlying mechanisms of psychological resilience and self-esteem in this process. Methods:A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 332 college students mainly from two universities in Henan Province.The instruments comprised the Upward Social Comparison subscale of the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure,the Psychological Resilience Scale,the Self-Esteem Scale,and the Academic Involution Behavior Scale.Psychological resilience was used as the mediating variable,and self-esteem as the moderating variable,to analyze the mechanism through which upward social comparison affects academic involution behavior. Results:(1)Upward social comparison positively predicted academic involution behavior among college students(β=0.561,p<0.001);(2)Psychological resilience partially mediated the relationship between upward social comparison and academic involution behavior,accounting for 20%of the total effect;(3)Self-esteem moderated the first and second halves of the mediating model.Self-esteem negatively moderated the effect of upward social comparison on psychological resilience(β=-0.272,p<0.001)and the effect of psychological resilience on academic involution behavior(β=-0.135,p=0.002). Conclusion:Upward social comparison can affect college students'academic involution behavior through the mediating effect of psychological resilience and the moderating effect of self-esteem.关键词
