Maternal anxiety-driven overprotective behaviors:An emotional-cognitive-behavioral closed-loop model

Abstract
Maternal anxiety is increasingly common in contemporary parenting contexts;however,the mechanisms through which it drives and sustains overprotective behaviors remain poorly understood and lack a systematic explanatory framework.Addressing the core question of"how maternal anxiety generates overprotective behaviors through multi-level psychological and neural processes,"this review synthesizes evidence from clinical,developmental,and neuroscience research to propose an innovative"emotion-cognition-behavior closed-loop model".The model posits that maternal anxiety first manifests at the emotional level as heightened threat perception and dysregulated emotional sensitivity-supported by amygdala hyperactivation-which subsequently leads,at the cognitive level,to attentional bias and catastrophic thinking,underpinned by insufficient prefrontal regulation.Ultimately,at the behavioral level,overprotective patterns are consolidated through a negative reinforcement mechanism of"anxiety relief",involving the ventral tegmental area-nucleus accumbens reward pathway.The dynamic interaction among emotional responses,cognitive biases,and behavioral reinforcement forms a self-sustaining psychological-neural closed-loop system.This integrative framework not only consolidates previously fragmented empirical findings but also provides a systematic theoretical foundation for future longitudinal research,cross-cultural validation,and multi-level psychological-neural interventions,including cognitive reappraisal,parent-child interaction training,and neuromodulation techniques.关键词
