What is Bei Ji:The Roots of Medical Thought of Sun Simiao

Abstract
The thought of Bei Ji(备急 for emergency)is the prominent concept of Sun Simiao's(孙思邈)Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao fang(《备急千金要方》Important Formulas Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces for Emergency),which runs through the entire book as a guiding principle.Bei Ji is mainly reflected in three aspects:being prepared for unexpected illnesses,preventing deterioration into severe conditions,and treating abrupt emergency diseases.They are interrelated and are the basic paths of Sun Simiao's pursuit of"superior doctors".Bei Ji also constitutes the core essence of his theory of treating diseases before they occur.The concept of Bei Ji is most prominently articulated in Bei Ji Pian(《备急篇》Chapter on Preparing for Emergencies),yet the philosophy permeates the entire book.Sun Simiao's Bei Ji thought was a crucial intellectual root of emergency medicine theory.However,during the evolution from Bei Ji to modern emergency treatment,the connotation of emergency medicine theory has gradually narrowed.The preventive awareness embodied in"being prepared for unexpected illnesses"and"preventing deterioration into severe conditions"has faded,as the field has shifted its focus to the practical application value of emergency treatment.Tracing the developmental lineage of the Bei Ji tradition in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)reveals the profound cultural heritage and enduring legacy of TCM culture.关键词
