Abstract

To enhance the moisturizing,moisture-absorbing,antioxidant,and wound-healing properties of fucoidan hydrogels,fucoidan was ex-tracted from kelp via the microwave-assisted extraction method,and then modified through carboxymethylation using the sodium hydroxide-so-dium chloroacetate method to prepare carboxymethylated fucoidan.Subsequently,a systematic study was conducted on the physicochemical prop-erties and biological activities of native fucoidan and its carboxymethylated derivative,as well as the self-healing performance of carboxymethyl-ated fucoidan hydrogel.The samples were characterized by ultraviolet(UV)spectrophotometer,X-ray diffractometer(XRD),and Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)spectrometer,and the polysaccharide content,antioxidant capacity,moisturizing and moisture-absorbing proper-ties,along with the self-healing performance of the hydrogels,were determined.The results demonstrated that the purity of the extracted fu-coidan reached84.54%.FT-IR and XRD analyses confirmed the successful introduction of carboxymethyl groups into the fucoidan molecular chain.After carboxymethylation modification,the hydroxyl radical scavenging rate of fucoidan was increased by 5.38 times,the superoxide radi-cal scavenging rate by 2.59 times,and the DPPH radical scavenging rate by 1.10 times.Meanwhile,its moisturizing and moisture-absorbing properties were significantly enhanced.Notably,the self-healing time of the hydrogel was shortened from 18 h to 12 h,which was superior to that of the native fucoidan hydrogel.This study verified that carboxymethylated fucoidan hydrogels can increase the number of active groups,as well as improve the antioxidant,moisture-absorbing,moisturizing and self-healing capacities of the material.It lays a theoretical foundation for the application of carboxymethylated fucoidan in the food and medical fields.
