Effects of different feeding strategies on growth performance,blood biochemical parameters,antioxidant capacity,and nutritional components of Monopterus albus

Abstract
To improve the utilization of aquaculture water space,an ecological polyculture model integrating ricefield eel(Monopterus albus)and red swamp crayfish(Procambarus clarkii)in eel dominated ponds was developed in this study,and the feeding strategies for M.albus under this model was investigated.Three treatments were set:polyculture with self formulated feed(Group P1),polyculture with self formulated feed plus frozen fish slurry(Group P2),and monoculture with commercial feed plus frozen fish slurry(Group C,control group).A 90 day feeding trial was conducted.The results showed that:regarding yield,the crayfish production under the polyculture model reached 87.42 kg/667 m2.The final body weights of eels were comparable across groups,with Group P1 at 13.19 kg/cage,Group P2 at 14.85 kg/cage,and Group C at 13.34 kg/cage.Concerning antioxidant capacity and immunity,Groups P1 and P2 exhibited significant advantages over Group C.The polyculture groups showed enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities and higher levels of immune parameters,whereas Group C had higher oxidative stress markers.This indicates that the ecological polyculture model improved the antioxidant status and non-specific immunity of M.albus.In terms of body biochemical composition,Groups P1 and P2 had lower muscle and whole-body lipid contents than Group C.Furthermore,Group P1 showed a significantly higher total essential amino acid and eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA)content in muscle,suggesting that the polyculture model coupled with pure formulated feed improved the nutritional quality of M.albus.In conclusion,the ecological polyculture model enhanced the health status and body nutrient composition of M.albus without inhibiting its growth,while the integration of P.clarkii provided additional yield.Therefore,under conditions where formulated feed exhibits good palatability,the ecological polyculture model and feeding pure formulated feed to M.albus are feasible.关键词
