"Honesty with Distinction of Closeness and Distance":The Influence of Honesty Tendencies and Decision-Making Modes on Adolescents' Honest Behaviors in In-group and Out-group Victim Situations

Abstract
Objective:To examine the differences in honest behavior between adolescents with high and low honesty tendencies under intuitive and deliberate decision-making modes when dishonest behavior harms different types of victims(in-group/out-group others).Methods:Eighty individuals with high and low honesty tendencies were selected using the Honesty-Humility Scale and the dice-rolling task.A mixed experimental design of 2(honesty tendency:high vs.low)×2(decision-making mode:intuitive vs.deliberate)×2(type of victim in the situation:in-group vs.out-group)was adopted.The"spot-the-difference"task was used to evaluate the honesty of adolescents.Results:(1)In situations where dishonest behavior harms in-group others,adolescents with both high and low honesty tendencies exhibit significantly more honest be-haviors under intuitive decision-making mode than under deliberate decision-making mode.(2)In situations where dishon-est behavior harms out-group others,adolescents with high honesty tendencies exhibit significantly more honest behaviors under intuitive decision-making mode than under deliberate decision-making mode.Conversely,adolescents with low hon-esty tendencies exhibit significantly less honest behavior under intuitive decision-making mode than under deliberate decision-making mode.Conclusion:Decision-making modes influence the honest behaviors of adolescents with high and low honesty tendencies.This influence is moderated by the interpersonal distance to the victim.It reveals a clear in-group preference.The victim effect remains stable only in in-group victimization scenarios.关键词
