A Critical Assessment of China-Related Research by the South African Institute of International Affairs(SAIIA)

Abstract
[Purpose/Significance]This study investigates the content and characteristics of China-related research conducted by the South African Institute of International Affairs(SAIIA),with the aim of capturing the think tank's view of China and revealing how African strategic circles'perceptions of China.The findings pro-vide policy insights for evaluating Africa's strategic decision-making regarding China's development path and China-Africa relations,and for advancing the"New Era All-Weather China-Africa Community with a Shared Future".[Method/Process]Drawing on policy reports,academic papers,and other publications produced by SAIIA from 2004 to 2025,this paper systematically examines the evolution,thematic focus,perspectives,and cognitive characteristics of its China-related studies,thereby forming a comprehensive perspective analysis of the think tank's research trajectory.[Result/Conclusions]SAIIA's China-related views are relatively objective and can be distilled into four thematic positions:deepening China-Africa cooperation,recognizing China's solutions,learning from China's experience,and addressing Africa's own shortcomings to achieve sustainable development,which reflects a"de-Westernized"shift toward micro-empirical studies.China should increase in-vestment in Africa-focused research to develop a distinctive Chinese approach to African studies.It is essential to enhance cooperation and exchanges between Chinese and African think tanks,thereby boosting the commu-nication capabilities and international influence of Chinese think tanks.Efforts must be accelerated to establish a Global South think tank research framework.This will strengthen mutual trust and connectivity between Chi-nese and African intellectual institutions,eliminate misconceptions about China among African think tanks,and enable Chinese think tanks to uniquely contribute to facilitating mutual learning between Chinese and African civilizations.关键词
