Adsorption of aspirin in solution by quaternary amino-functionalized chitosan fibers

摘要

Abstract

Chitosan fibers(CFs)were quaternized under alkaline conditions using(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)-trimethylammonium chloride with epichlorohydrin as a cross-linking agent to synthesize quaternary amino-functionalized chitosan fibers(QECFs).The structure of QECFs was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and their adsorption performance for aspirin(ASP)in solution was systematically evaluated.The results demonstrated that,compared to pristine CFs,QECFs exhibited a broader pH adaptability and significantly faster adsorption kinetics,achieving 50%of the equilibrium adsorption capacity within 5 minutes and approaching adsorption equilibrium within 30 minutes.The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity increased significantly from 10.02 mg·g-1 to 284.19 mg·g-1,representing a 28-fold enhancement.Mechanistic studies revealed that the dominant mechanism for the improved adsorption performance was the electrostatic interaction between the quaternary ammonium groups(R4N⁺)on the QECFs molecular chains and the carboxylate groups(―COO‒)of ASP.Protonated amino groups(=NH+―)further contribute synergistically via electrostatic interactions.
