Abstract

Food waste(FW)crushing and direct discharge is a sustainable treatment strategy,but its impact on emissions of the potent greenhouse gas,nitrous oxide(N2O),remains to be assessed.The influence mecha-nism of FW degradation products on N2O emissions during denitrification were explored by simulating the mu-nicipal wastewater under the scenario of FW crushing and direct discharge into sewer.The experimental re-sults show that FW degradation products inhibit the reduction rates of both nitrate and nitrite,with the decline of 23.3%and 19.0%,respectively,while increasing the N2O reduction rate by 9.8%.Under the condition of non-limiting carbon source,FW degradation products enhance the electron acquisition capacity of N2O reduc-tase(Nos),and intensify the electron competition among denitrification reductases,prompting more electrons to flow towards Nos.The alteration of the electron distribution pattern is the key mechanism of the improve-ment of N2O reduction capability by FW degradation products,which helps to reduce N2O accumulation during denitrification.
