The Expansion of the Category of the"Collective Worker"in the Era of Algorithmic Management and Its Implications for Labor Relations
摘要
Abstract
Algorithmic management reshapes digital labor, endowing it with characteristics of spatial dispersion, diverse worker identities, ambiguous labor relations and data-based labor processes.Centering on the core question of whether workers under such circumstances can constitute the"collective worker",this paper revisits Marx's classic expositions on cooperation, division of labor, machinery systems and capital domination. It argues that the defining criterion lies not in physical spatial concentration, but in the socialized totality of labor generated under the organizational logic of capital.Platforms, algorithms and data infrastructure do not eliminate this logic;instead, they connect scattered labor through technological means, set labor rhythms, convert labor outputs and appropriate collective surplus value. Therefore, platforms, data, content, knowledge and service workers together form a new structure of socialized labor. This analytical category helps unpack the contradictions between fragmented labor and totalized production, superficial autonomy and algorithmic control,as well as collaborative production and platform appropriation. It also provides a theoretical basis for the identification of labor relations, algorithmic regulation, protection of data rights and interests, and the organization of workers.关键词
