Can Remote Work Narrow the Gender Gap in Housework?

Abstract
In the era of the digital economy,remote work has reshaped the traditional division of household labor.Using data from the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this study constructs a comprehensive index measuring gender equality in household labor and adopts a province-year-industry fixed-effects model to examine the impact of wives' remote work participation on the gendered division of household labor within families.The results indicate that wives engaging in remote work can effectively narrow the gender gap in household labor,with a more pronounced effect observed in dual-earner households.This impact is more salient in eastern,central and northeastern regions,as well as in families with less traditional gender norms and no fertility intentions;the presence of preschool-aged children significantly weakens such effect.Meanwhile,wives' remote work participation substantially improves women's subjective well-being by expanding their time autonomy and work flexibility.Accordingly,this study puts forward targeted policy suggestions,which can serve as references for advancing balanced digital infrastructure development,fostering egalitarian gender perceptions,and improving childcare services.关键词
