Abstract

To evaluate the application potential of spent mushroom substrate(SMS)in promoting the vegetative growth and safe production of alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.)grown in tailings soil,a pot experi-ment was conducted with four SMS application rates:0%(TS_0,control),2%(TS_2),4%(TS_4),and 6%(TS_6)(w/w).The effects of SMS amendment on the vegetative growth and heavy metal accu-mulation of alfalfa grown in tailings soil were investigated.The results showed that the 4%SMS treatment produced the most favorable effects.Compared with the control,it significantly increased plant height and biomass,while enhancing the accumulation of nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P),potassium(K),and amino acids(P<0.05).In addition,the overall amino acid composition was improved to a certain extent.Fur-thermore,SMS amendment reduced the accumulation of potentially hazardous elements,including copper(Cu),iron(Fe),chromium(Cr),and nickel(Ni),in the aboveground tissues of alfalfa,while showing no inhibitory effect on the accumulation of the essential micronutrient zinc(Zn).In conclusion,the appli-cation of 4%SMS to tailings soil promoted the vegetative growth of alfalfa and effectively reduced the ac-cumulation of potentially hazardous heavy metals in aboveground tissues,demonstrating the promising po-tential of SMS for supporting the safe production of alfalfa under tailings soil conditions.
