Abstract

To investigate the effects of adding artificially cultivated Cordyceps militaris(CM)to the basal diet on the growth performance,conventional meat quality,and economic benefits of finishing pigs,160 healthy Duroc× Landrace× Yorkshire Crossbred finishing pigs with similar body conditions and an av-erage initial weight of(36.83±0.06)kg were randomly divided into 2 groups.Each group consisted of 5 replicates with 16 pigs per replicate.The control group was fed a basal diet,while the experimental group was fed the basal diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg CM powder for 90 days.Growth performance,carcass traits,conventional meat quality,and economic benefits were evaluated at the end of the trial.The results showed that regarding meat quality,the marbling score of the CM group was significantly higher than that of the control group(P<0.05),and the shear force was significantly lower(P<0.05).Furthermore,the redness value(a*)of pork in the CM group was significantly higher at 45 min,12 h,and 24 h(P<0.05),and the pH values at 12 h and 24 h were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05),in-dicating effectively improved meat tenderness and color.In terms of growth performance and carcass traits,the live weight and warm carcass weight of the CM group were significantly higher than those of the control(P<0.05).The average daily feed intake and average daily gain in the CM group increased by 11.81%and 4.07%,respectively,while the feed-to-gain ratio decreased by 1.8%.Economically,the aver-age gross profit per pig in the CM group was 67.73 yuan higher than that in the control group.In conclu-sion,dietary supplementation with 300 mg/kg artificially cultivated CM powder can effectively improve conventional meat quality,enhance growth performance and carcass traits,and consequently increase the economic benefits of pig farming,proving to be a feed additive with great application potential.
