Effects of LEARNS model-based health education on medication adherence,asthma control,and self-management ability in children with asthma

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of the LEARNS model-based health education on medication adherence,asthma control,lung function,and self-management in children with asthma.Methods A total of 74 asthmatic children hospitalized in Affiliated Hospital of Youjiang Medical University for Nationalities from June 2023 to June 2024 and their primary caregivers were selected as study subjects by convenience sampling.A nonconcurrent,controlled design was adopted to avoid intervention contamination.Based on the time of admission,37 children admitted from June to December 2023 were assigned to control group,and 37 children admitted from January to June 2024 were assigned to observation group.The con-trol group were given conventional health education for childhood asthma,while the observation group were given the LEARNS model-based health education(listen,establish,adopt,reinforce,name,strengthen).After 6 months of interven-tion,differences in asthma medication adherence(MARS-A scale),childhood asthma control level(C-ACT scale),pulmo-nary function(FEV1％),as well as self-management ability(asthma self-management scale for children)between the two groups were compared.Results After 6 months of intervention,the medication adherence score of the observation group was higher than that of the control group(P<0.01);the childhood asthma control test score was better than that of the control group(P<0.01);the pulmonary function index FEV1％was significantly higher than that of the control group(P<0.001);and the scores of all dimensions of the self-management scale(daily life management,disease medical management,and social-psychological management)and the total score were higher than those of the control group,and differences were statis-tically significant(P<0.01).Conclusion LEARNS model-based health education intervention can improve medication adherence,asthma control level,lung function indicators,and self-management ability in children with asthma.It has cer-tain value for clinical promotion and application in the nursing care of childhood asthma.关键词
