Neural Mechanism of Earthquake Early Warning Information Cognition:An Emerging Interdisciplinary Field
摘要
Abstract
Earthquake early warning information(EEWI)serves as a critical tool for enhancing public risk perception and guiding protective behaviors before the onset of strong ground shaking. However, the cognitive processes through which individuals perceive, interpret, and respond to such time-critical information remain un-derexplored,particularly from a neuroscientific perspective.A novel interdisciplinary research field—the neural mechanism of EEWI cognition is introduced and delineated in this paper, and a systematic review of relevant lit-erature is provided from four interconnected domains:①disaster early warning information cognition,②EEWI research,③the application of electroencephalography in disaster risk information cognition,and④the neural mechanisms underlying general information cognition. The review reveals that while each of these four areas has developed relatively independently, their research trajectories are increasingly convergent.Studies on disaster early warning information cognition have primarily focused on behavioral responses and influencing factors, yet lack a unified theoretical model.Research on EEWI has concentrated on system design, message content, and dissemination strategies, with limited attention to how such information is cognitively processed by end-users.Electroencephalography-based studies have demonstrated the feasibility of using neurophysiological tools to in-vestigate human responses to risk-related stimuli, although their application to earthquake early warning contexts remains scarce.Meanwhile, foundational research in cognitive neuroscience has uncovered the brain regions and networks involved in information processing, such as the prefrontal cortex, parietal lobe, and amygdala, offering a theoretical and methodological basis for exploring EEWI cognition at the neural level.Synthesizing these lines of inquiry,it is argued in this paper that the neural mechanism of EEWI cognition represents a critical yet under-developed research frontier.Investigating how the brain processes EEWI can help unravel the"black box"be-tween information exposure and behavioral response, thereby advancing theoretical understanding and informing evidence-based design of EEW messages. The proposed research field integrates behavioral, informational, and neuroscientific perspectives, forming a complete research chain from information design → neural processing →cognitive outcome → behavioral response.Looking ahead, this emerging field should prioritize breakthroughs in the following directions:①constructing a theoretical model that integrates time pressure, emotional arousal, and cognitive processing to explain divergent cognitive pathways under different EEWI types and individual charac-teristics;②advancing EEG/ERP methods by developing ecologically valid multimodal paradigms to systematical-ly examine the moderating effects of individual differences such as earthquake experience and risk perception;③adopting a social cognitive neuroscience perspective, using hyperscanning to reveal inter-brain synchrony and the enhancing or interfering effects of social contexts on EEWI processing;④developing and validating neurocogni-tively grounded EEWI design principles—targeting attention capture, semantic comprehension, and emotional arousal—through a closed-loop process of neural experiment, design translation, and behavioral testing;and ⑤promoting cross-cultural comparisons and localized studies based on Chinese publics'risk experiences and cogni-tive characteristics, thereby providing direct scientific evidence for China's EEWI service system.By bridging di-saster science, safety science, and cognitive neuroscience,a foundational framework is laid in this paper for fu-ture empirical research and theoretical development. It underscores the potential of neurocognitive approaches to transform the study of disaster information communication from descriptive behavioral analysis to mechanistic explanation, ultimately contributing to more effective and psychologically attuned earthquake early warning systems.关键词
