Abstract

The carbon emission policies formulated within the region and their impact on residents' green lifestyles should become one of the core concerns in promoting low-carbon development.Using panel data from 28 cities in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River Urban Agglomeration over 2005-2023,this paper employed a multi-period difference-in-differences approach to systemati-cally examine how low-carbon city pilot policies affect residents' green lifestyles.The findings offered empirical insights for policy opti-mization and green development practices.Empirical results indicated that:(1)Low-carbon city pilot policies in the region significant-ly reduce residents' household carbon emission intensity and effectively promote the formation and deepening of green lifestyles.This conclusion remains robust after a series of robustness tests.(2)At the city size level,the policy exerted the most pronounced promoting effect on green lifestyles among residents in large cities.At the city type level,resource-based cities show stronger policy responsive-ness.(3)These policies not only directly drived the formation of green lifestyles but also indirectly influenced residents' green lifestyles through two pathways:promoting green technological innovation and enhancing residents' environmental awareness.
