Adoption of digital technologies,value chain power,and income growth of farmers and herdsmen:Empirical research in pastoral-farmland ecotone in Xinjiang

Abstract
On the basis of defining the concept and dimension of value chain power of farmers and herdsmen,we construct a theoretical analysis framework of"technology adoption-power reconstruction-income growth",and make an empirical test based on the survey data of 1610 farmers and herdsmen in the agro-pastoral ecotone of Xinjiang by using endogenous transformation regression model.The results indicate that:1)The adoption of digital technology can significantly promote the growth of the total income of farmers and herdsmen,and the promotion of income in animal husbandry is significantly stronger than that of in agriculture,and its path is reflected in raising product prices and expanding sales channels.2)The adoption of digital technology significantly enhances the value chain power of farmers and herdsmen at the sales end,especially the bargaining power and trading power.3)The mechanism analysis shows that the value chain power plays an important intermediary role in the process of digital technology adoption to increase the income of farmers and herdsmen,and the intermediary effect accounts for about 37.4％,among which bargaining power and trading power are the main transmission paths,while the intermediary effect between rule power and demonstration power is not significant.4)Heterogeneity analysis reveals that there is"Matthew effect"in the income-increasing effect of digital technology adoption,and the group with dominant initial resource endowment benefits more.However,its empowerment effect is universal,and the promotion of value chain power of vulnerable groups is equally significant.So,it proposes that digital infrastructure and literacy improvement projects should be implemented,local digital intermediaries and regional public brands should be cultivated,the organizational model of digital cooperatives should be innovated,and a policy evaluation system covering the dimension of empowerment should be constructed,to provide reference for promoting the sustainable income increase of farmers and herdsmen and the inclusive development of digital economy in agricultural and pastoral areas from the perspective of empowerment.关键词
