Recent progress in stable isotope techniques for the identification and geographical origin traceability of natural fibers
摘要
Abstract
With the improvement of living standards and the enhancement of environmental awareness, the demand for natural fiber textiles by consumers is increasing day by day. However, there are quality issues such as passing off inferior products as genuine and false labeling of origin in the market. This seriously damages consumers'rights and interests and hinders the sustainable development of the industry.Reliable traceability methods are urgently needed. To address this issue, this paper reviews the research progress of the application of stable isotope technology combined with chemometrics methods in the identification of natural fibers and the traceability of origin.Firstly,it summarizes the main traceability methods in recent years, including quality index analysis method,DNA molecular marker technology,near-infrared spectroscopy technology and stable isotope technology. This article demonstrates the feasibility of using isotope ratios of carbon(δ13 C),nitrogen(δ15 N),hydrogen(δ2 H),oxygen(δ18 O),and sulfur(δ34 S)as"fingerprints"to identify the origin of fibers.Combined with the chemical metrology method, this can also enable the identification and traceability of natural fibers. Subsequently, the current research status of stable isotope technology in the traceability of plant fibers(cotton and linen)and animal fibers(silk and wool)is elaborated upon, and the chemical metrology methods used for analyzing complex isotope data are discussed. In the case of cotton traceability, hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes(δ2 H and δ18 O)can effectively distinguish the origin, while strontium isotopes(87 Sr/86 Sr)provide the possibility for the traceability of archaeological textiles.Although there are still few direct studies on hemp fibers, the research on cannabis plants and flax seeds indicates that carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur stable isotopes(δ13C,δ2 H,δ18 O,δ15 N and δ34 S)have the potential to serve as geographical indicators. In the field of animal fibers, strontium, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen isotopes have been successfully used to distinguish silk and wool from different geographical sources.Unsupervised learning methods(such as hierarchical cluster analysis)help visualize the natural grouping of data and verify the feasibility of traceability;supervised learning methods(such as linear discriminant analysis)have been proven to be able to construct traceability classification models for plant and animal fibers based on stable isotope data. For more complex datasets, nonlinear methods such as support vector machines(SVM)and artificial neural networks(ANN)also show potential for application.Although the potential of stable isotope technology is huge, its wide application in the textile field still faces challenges, including:high and complex costs of representative sample collection, the lack of a comprehensive standardized stable isotope reference database, the unclear mechanism of the influence of environmental factors on isotope characteristics, and the to-be-investigated potential impact of the textile processing process(such as boiling and dyeing)on the original isotope fingerprint. To address these challenges, future research should focus on the following aspects:(Ⅰ)establishing a comprehensive and reliable stable isotope database through rigorous and extensive sampling;(Ⅱ)systematically clarifying the correlations between environmental factors and processing conditions and the final stable isotope fingerprints of fibers;(Ⅲ)developing standardized analytical procedures and combining them with optimized chemometric methods to construct robust traceability models. This review believes that the combination of stable isotope technology and appropriate chemometric analysis provides powerful tools for the authenticity identification and origin traceability of natural fibers, which can help enhance supply chain transparency, protect consumers'rights and interests, and promote fair trade in the textile industry.Establishing a standardized traceability system based on this technology is crucial for verifying the authenticity of raw material origins and achieving traceability queries throughout the entire chain of spinning, weaving, and garment production.关键词
