Effects of different feed types on reproductive performance,nutrient apparent metabolic rate of breeding pigeons,and carry-over effects on offspring squabs

Abstract
The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of different feed types on the reproductive performance and nutrient apparent metabolic rate of breeding pigeons,as well as the growth performance and slaughter performance of squabs.A total of 48 pairs healthy four-year-old White King breeding pigeons with similar body weight and egg-laying interval were randomly divided into two groups,with eight replicates per group and three pairs of pigeons per replicate.The control group(mixed feed group)was fed a diet consisting of 70%raw grains+30%pelleted feed,while the experimental group(pelleted feed group)was fed a pelleted diet.The pre-test period was 14 days,and the formal test period was 46 days,including an 18-day incubation period and a 28-day feeding period.The results showed that compared with the mixed feed group,the pelleted feed group exhibited increases in the fertilization rate of hatching eggs,the hatchability rate of set eggs,and the healthy chick rate.The apparent metabolic rate of crude protein during the feeding period in the pelleted feed group was extremely higher than that in the mixed feed group(P<0.01).There were no significant differences between the mixed feed group and the pelleted feed group in the birth weight of squabs,the average daily gain from 1 to 28 days of age,and the feed-to-nest gain ratio during the feeding period and the whole period(P>0.05).No significant differences were observed between the mixed feed group and the pelleted feed group in the slaughter performance indicators of squabs,including dressing percentage,half-eviscerated percentage,whole-eviscerated percentage,breast muscle percentage,leg muscle percentage,and abdominal fat percentage(P>0.05).The study shows that the pelleted feeding mode has no significant effect on the reproductive performance of breeding pigeons,the growth performance of squabs,and the slaughter performance of squabs,but it improves the apparent metabolic rate of crude protein in breeding pigeons.关键词
