Exploration of the Regulation of Immune Cell Homeostasis by Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Depression Based on the"Yin and Yang in Equilibrium"Theory of Huangdi Neijing

Abstract
Depression is a common psychiatric disorder,and the disruption of immune cell homeostasis(characterized by excessive immune activation)is closely associated with its pathogenesis.The classical traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)text Huangdi Neijing proposed the theory of"Yin and Yang in equilibrium",which emphasizes the dynamic balance of Yin and Yang.The imbalance of immune cell homeostasis observed in depression corresponds to the pathological state of"Yang excess failing to secure Yin".TCM possesses unique advantages in depression treatment,including multi-component,multi-target,multi-pathway,and synergistic effects.By regulating immune cell homeostasis,TCM restores the state of"Yin and Yang in equilibrium",thereby ameliorating depressive symptoms.This review takes the immunomodulatory role of TCM as a starting point,focusing on traditional herbal formulas that improve immune cell function,attenuate neuroinflammation,and alleviate depressive-like behaviors,as well as bioactive components that suppress excessive immune activation and restore immune homeostasis.Collectively,these findings highlight the potential of TCM in modulating immune function to intervene in the progression of depression.Guided by the Huangdi Neijing theory of"Yin and Yang in equilibrium,"the effective regulation of immune cell homeostasis by TCM may correct the pathological state of"Yang excess failing to secure Yin"in depression,offering a novel therapeutic approach.Despite the progress achieved,challenges remain,including ethical limitations and the current research focus being primarily on central rather than peripheral immune cells.Future studies should place greater emphasis on the regulation of peripheral immune cell homeostasis and explore integrative strategies combining TCM and Western medicine in the treatment of depression.关键词
