The Conception and Failure of France's Nansha Base Construction in the 1930s

Abstract
From 1937 to 1939,under the pressure of Japan's southward expansion,the United Kingdom proposed a joint plan to France to build an aviation base in the Nansha Islands.However,negotiations broke down due to disputes over sovereignty,prompting France to proceed with an independent construction plan.The core scheme centered on Taip-ing Island,aiming to establish a comprehensive military base integrating aviation,communications,and defense capabili-ties.Nevertheless,the plan was hampered by prohibitive construction costs,divergent perceptions of its strategic value,and technical difficulties.As Taiping Island had already been illegally occupied by Japan,France's assertion of sover-eignty and base construction efforts encountered substantial resistance,resulting in a standoff between the two sides.Ulti-mately,France's conception of a Nansha base collapsed under the combined impact of Japan's forcible annexation of the Nansha Islands,the diversion of French military forces and resources to the European theater of war,and the intrinsic constraints of its colonial system.This process not only exposed France's strategic limitations in the geopolitical competi-tion in the Far East,but also reflected the divergence of interests among European colonial powers and the profound im-pact of Japan's expansion on the geopolitical landscape of East Asia.关键词
