Treating Multiple Sclerosis Based on the Principle of"Treating Muscle Atrophy by Focusing on the Yangming Meridian"

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis(MS)is an autoimmune-mediated,chronic progressive demyelinating disease of the cen-tral nervous system(CNS).The lesions primarily affect the periventricular areas,juxtacortical regions,optic nerves,spinal cord,cerebellum,and brainstem.MS can cause damage to the autonomic nervous system(ANS),sensorimotor function,and cognitive abilities,severely impacting the quality of life for patients.In recent years,the prevalence of MS has been increas-ing annually,yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.Western medicine primarily employs targeted therapies direct-ed at the immune system and CNS to slow disease progression,such as teriflunomide,fumarate derivatives,and siponimod.Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)offers certain advantages in treating MS.The principle"treating flaccidity disorders by focusing on the Yangming"is derived from the Huangdi Neijing,providing a therapeutic approach for MS.While TCM does not have a unified disease name corresponding exactly to MS,it is most commonly categorized under the"flaccidity syndrome"pattern.Based on this fundamental therapeutic principle of"focusing on the Yangming,"this paper thoroughly analyzes common MS clinical manifestations—such as visual decline,diplopia,motor impairment,cognitive dysfunction,ataxia,and bladder or rectal dysfunction—and correlates these manifestations with the Yangming system.It proposes treat-ing MS from the Yangming perspective through three interconnected frameworks:the nutritive and defensive systems,me-ridians and collaterals,and zang-fu organs.The corresponding therapeutic strategies include:Harmonizing the nutritive and defensive qi,supplementing qi and blood clearing heat and draining dampness,dredging the meridians Supplementing the five zang organs,prioritizing the spleen and stomach as the root.The aim is to provide clinicians with new perspectives and broaden their therapeutic approach when treating MS.关键词
