Cognitive Rigidity and Threat Elasticity:A Study on Russia's"Hybrid Warfare"through the Lens of Securitization

Abstract
As a prominent concept in recent international studies,"hybrid warfare"has undergone continual conceptual expansion and has been endowed with increasingly salient political functions.From the perspective of securitization,this article examines how Russia has employed the narrative of"hybrid warfare"to transform threat perceptions into a logic of governance and concrete policy practice.To address the limitations of conventional securitization theory,the article proposes a"cognitive rigidity-threat elasticity"model and introduces the concept of the"Elastic Threat Template"as its core analytical tool.It argues that the central mechanism underlying the securitization of"hybrid warfare"in Russia lies in the interaction between cognitive rigidity regarding the West's allegedly inherent hostility and the threat elasticity of the"hybrid warfare"narrative:the former provides the historical and psychological foundations for securitization,while the latter supplies an expandable discursive framework and policy interface through which securitization can proceed.Through their mutual reinforcement,"hybrid warfare"has gradually evolved from an imported concept into an instrumental discourse serving the construction of national security.While this securitizing practice has enhanced regime legitimacy,promoted social integration,and expanded Russia's capacity for diplomatic mobilization,it has also generated risks such as threat inflation,rising institutional costs,and the erosion of international rules.The article thus reveals how historical cognition,narrative construction,and policy practice interact in contemporary international politics to jointly shape the logic of national security governance.关键词
