A Comparative Study of Chinese and Indian Conceptions of Medicine:An Examination Based on Mythological Narratives

Abstract
Focusing on medical content from Indian epics and mythological narratives,and combining it with traditional Chinese literary and historical works,texts on Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),and Buddhist scriptures translated into Chinese,this study analyzes the medical concepts implicit in these sources from four dimensions:the image of physicians,diseases,medicines,and medicinal properties,with the aim of exploring the constructional patterns of traditional medicine.The findings reveal that traditional Indian medical philosophy was profoundly shaped by philosophical thought and religious pursuits.For instance,the historically low social status of physicians in traditional India was fundamentally rooted in the Brahminical concept of ritual purity and religious goals.Similarly,medical practitioners occupied a humble position in ancient Chinese society.However,TCM places greater emphasis on"seeking the root cause within oneself"rather than"blaming others",which explains why moral judgment of patients for impurity is rare in this medical system.Furthermore,traditional Indian medicine deployed mythological rhetoric to elucidate medical principles.For example,trace the divine origin of healing back to mythological figures such as Brahma,and recontextualize established myths to explain medical theories.Another important example is integrating the understandings of poisons and remedies,garlic and myrobalan,into the classical myth of the"Churning of the Ocean".In terms of the relationship between medicines and poisons,both China and India share the notion that medicines and poisons originate from the same source.Nevertheless,TCM attaches greater importance to the identity of poisons and medicines in clinical practice.Through multiple textual comparisons,this study presents the traditional medical construction model under the combined influence of philosophy,literature,and medical practice.The findings suggest that traditional Chinese and Indian medical materials have complementary effects,which can provide a reference for understanding the cultural origins,evolution laws,and innovative development of traditional medicine.关键词
