The Impact of Meaning in Life,Core Self-Evaluation and Emergency Incident Handling on Job Burnout Among Grassroots Civil Servants

Abstract
Grassroots civil servants are a key force in advancing the modernization of grassroots governance,yet they long face high-pressure work environments that easily induce job burnout or even a"lying flat"mentality.Based on the Cognitive Appraisal Theory of Stress and the Conservation of Resources Theory,this study uses questionnaire data from 859 grassroots civil servants in two counties of a city in southeastern coastal China.It employs the Meaning in Life Questionnaire,the Core Self-Evaluations Scale,and the Maslach Burnout Inventory to explore the mechanism of how meaning in life affects job burnout.Empirical analysis finds that:meaning in life can significantly and negatively affect job burnout among grassroots civil servants;core self-evaluation plays a partial mediating role between meaning in life and job burnout,with the mediating effect accounting for 61.33％of the total effect;handling emergency incidents significantly moderates the second half of this path.Specifically,for civil servants who directly participate in handling emergency incidents,the negative effect of core self-evaluation on job burnout(simple slope-1.48)is significantly stronger than for non-participants(-1.11).Furthermore,the mediating effect value for the direct participation group(-0.28)is greater than that of the non-participation group(-0.21).The research indicates that meaning in life not only directly reduces job burnout but also acts indirectly by enhancing core self-evaluation;participating in emergency incidents handling effectively strengthens the inhibitory effect of core self-evaluation on job burnout.These results provide empirical evidence for the prevention and governance of burnout,suggesting that official education should focus on enhancing grassroots civil servants' sense of meaning in life,encourage active participation in public emergency incidents handling,and strengthen positive self-cognition during this process to effectively prevent and alleviate burnout.关键词
