The association between semantic network structure and creativity:Evidence from behavioral and resting-state fMRI data
摘要
Abstract
Creativity arises from the interplay between knowledge structure and cognitive control. This study aims to systematically investigate the role of semantic network organization in creative thinking across multiple psychological levels.Specifically,it examines how the topological properties of semantic networks relate to both creative ability and creative personality, and its potential neural correlates.By adopting a three-part design, this work seeks to bridge cognitive, trait, and neurobiological perspectives to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how knowledge organization supports creative thinking across different psychological levels. The study comprises three interconnected investigations.Study 1 employed a group-comparison approach, constructing task-based semantic networks from free association responses during an alternate uses task to assess divergent thinking.High-and low-creativity groups were compared in terms of network topology.Study 2 extended the analysis to the individual-differences level by using a similarity judgment task to build static,trait-like semantic networks for each participant. These were then correlated with scores on the Williams Creativity Questionnaire, which measures dispositional creativity across dimensions such as curiosity, imagination, and risk-taking.In Study 3,resting-state fMRI data were collected to examine the neural underpinnings of the observed structure-trait associations.Baseline activity in core nodes of the semantic network—such as the left inferior frontal gyrus and posterior middle temporal gyrus—was tested as a potential moderator of the relationship between semantic network modularity and creative personality. Study 1 revealed that individuals with higher creative ability exhibited semantic networks with stronger small-world properties and lower modularity during task performance, suggesting a more integrated and flexible organization conducive to divergent thinking.Study 2 demonstrated that these structural advantages extend beyond momentary performance:individuals with higher creative personality scores showed similarly efficient static network configurations, characterized by lower modularity and higher global efficiency.Crucially,Study 3 identified a significant moderation effect—individuals with higher spontaneous activity in key semantic processing regions exhibited a weaker negative association between semantic network modularity and creative personality. This indicates that intrinsic neural activity can alter the impact of knowledge organization on creative expression. These findings suggest that semantic network structure is a stable cognitive feature linked to both creative performance and long-term creative dispositions.More importantly, they reveal that the influence of this structure is not fixed but is dynamically regulated by the brain's intrinsic functional state.Rather than acting independently, cognitive architecture and neural readiness interact to shape creative potential. This integrative perspective advances a more nuanced model of creativity, unifying associative and executive accounts, and highlights the importance of considering both structural and dynamic factors in understanding individual differences in creative cognition.关键词
