Analysis of Tobacco Epidemic and Its Influencing Factors among Adolescents in Zhejiang Province:A Survey of 26 938 Middle School Students

Abstract
Objective To investigate the tobacco epidemic and its influencing factors among adolescents in Zhejiang Province,and to provide a reference for targeted tobacco control interventions.Methods Data were derived from the Zhejiang adolescent health risk factor survey.A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling design was used to recruit 26 938 students from middle schools across 30 counties(cities/districts).Tobacco use data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire.Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors associated with current smoking and second-hand smoke exposure among adolescents.Results The current smoking rate among adolescents in Zhejiang Province was 5.79%,and the second-hand smoke exposure rate was 53.58%.The smoking rate was significantly higher in boys(8.28%)than in girls(3.14%)(χ2=325.866,P＜0.001),and it was higher in rural students(6.73%)than in urban students(4.44%)(χ2=62.452,P＜0.001).The smoking rates among junior high school,senior high school,and vocational high school students were 3.70%,3.05%,and 12.61%,respectively,with statistically significant differences(χ2=788.590,P＜0.001).Multivariate Logistic regression analysis revealed that gender,age,region,school type,parental marital status,father education level,boarding at school,registered residence in this county/district,family economic status,smoking status of cohabitants,awareness of the harms of smoking and awareness of the harms of passive smoking were factors associated with adolescent smoking(all P＜0.05).For second-hand smoke exposure,gender,school type,parental marital status,boarding at school,and smoking status of cohabitants were identified as influencing factors(all P＜0.05).Conclusions The tobacco epidemic among adolescents in Zhejiang Province remains a serious concern,with an upward trend in e-cigarette use.Multi-sectoral collaborative tobacco control interventions are needed to reduce the smoking rate among adolescents.关键词
