On Three Practical Dimensions of the Dialectics of Nature in History of Ireland

Abstract
Engels'posthumous manuscript History of Ireland is a profound and pioneering text in the development of Marxism,especially in the history of materialist dialectics.It transcends the narratives of traditional national history and colonial history and contains three practical dimensions of the dialectics of nature.First,it uses the dialectics of the socialization of nature to reveal how Irish land was alienated under British capitalist colonization and how the monoculture of potatoes triggered the Great Famine in Ireland.Second,it employs the dialectics of ecological-class contradiction to analyse the intense conflict between Irish peasants and British colonial rulers resulting from the potato monoculture.Third,it applies the spatial dialectics of capital accumulation to elucidate the spatial restructuring of Ireland through"dehumanization"and"re-pastoralization".These three dimensions jointly confirm Engels'view of"the unity of natural history and human history",vividly demonstrate the validity of his theory of capitalist"metabolic rift",and preliminarily constitute the theoretical precursor to his critique of spatial production.These three practical dimensions offer an invaluable historical mirror for understanding the global ecological crisis caused by contemporary capitalism.关键词
