The Impact of Family Care on the Planting Scale of Facility Fruit and Vegetable Growers:The Moderating Role Based on Intergenerational Support

Abstract
Against the backdrop of tightening agricultural labor supply,studying the impact of family care on planting scale is of significant importance for stabilizing agricultural production and promoting the high-quality development of facility agriculture.In recent years,the government has placed high emphasis on the development of appropriately-scaled agricultural management.Facility fruit and vegetable growers often assume dual roles as both family caregivers and agricultural producers.The demands of family care and the inputs required for large-scale production create significant conflicts,forming a core practical barrier to the advancement of large-scale agricultural management.Based on micro-level survey data of facility fruit and vegetable growers collected from March to December 2025,this article explored the impact of family care on the planting scale and the moderating role of intergenerational support.The results indicated that:family care had a negative impact on the planting scale of facility fruit and vegetable production,primarily inhibiting scale expansion through three paths of financial crowding,time diversion,and labor input constraints.The moderating effect of intergenerational support exhibited obvious differentiation characteristics.Intergenerational living support and labor support could effectively alleviate the negative impact of family care on planting scale,whereas intergenerational financial support significantly exacerbated the negative impact of family care on planting scale.The impact of family care showed significant group heterogeneity.For growers with a planting area of 0.333-6.667 hm2,aged in 55 to 61 years,and with low per capita household income,the influence of family care on planting scale was more pronounced.Based on this,it is recommended to improve public service facilities,strengthen growers' training,enhance the intelligence and mechanization level of facility fruit and vegetable production,and pay attention and safeguard the health and welfare of the elderly,so as to promote appropriately-scaled management of facility fruit and vegetable production according the local conditions,improve growers' ability to balance appropriately-scaled management of facility fruit and vegetable production and family care,and advance the high-quality development of the facility fruit and vegetable industry.关键词
