Cultural Dimension of Measurement:A Three-Dimensional Strategy for the English Translation of Non-standard Units in Shang Han Za Bing Lun

Abstract
Non-standard measurement units in the Shang Han Za Bing Lun,serving as cultural symbols that transcend basic quantitative functions,constitute a core challenge in the translation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)classics.Guided by Susan Bassnett's Cultural Translation Theory,this study establishes a pioneering analytical framework categorized into four types of units:numerical,analogical,vessel-based,and estimated.Through a comparative analysis of the English versions by Luo Xiwen,Li Zhaoguo,and Nigel Wiseman,the research reveals that literal translation strategies achieve only superficial equivalence,whereas generalized domestication results in a significant loss of cultural information.In contrast,the integration of transliteration-plus-annotation with systematic commentary more effectively preserves cultural symbols and elucidates the unique quantitative wisdom of TCM.Consequently,this study proposes that the English translation of non-standard units must transcend the narrow dimension of"quantitative equivalence"to construct a"three-dimensional integrated strategy"characterized by"literal translation as the foundation,transliteration for consolidation,and annotation for deepening".This strategy aims to dynamically balance cultural authenticity with textual readability,offering an effective pathway toward achieving Bassnett's goal of cultural functional equivalence.关键词
