Exploring the Etiology,Pathomechanism,and Treatment of Myopia in Ancient Tradi-tional Chinese Medicine Books Based on a Neo4j Knowledge Graph

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the etiology,pathomechanism,and therapeutic methods of myopia recorded in ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)books based on a Neo4j knowledge graph.METHODS The entries related to myopia were retrieved from Zhong Hua Yi Dian(Chinese Medical Canon).After screening according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,the extracted information was entered into Excel 2019,covering dynasty,author,book title,disease name,etiology,pathomechanism,therapeutic method,formula,Chinese materia medica,meridian,acupoint,nursing,and contraindications.A structured semantic set composed of head entity-relation-tail entity was designed according to the schema layer.In Python 3.8,the Py2neo package was invoked to manage the Neo4j graph database and construct the knowledge graph,and the PageRank algorithm was adopted to calculate node importance.RESULTS(1)Extraction:A total of 376 entities and 957 relations were extracted,including 408 record relations,399 inclusion relations,79 authorship relations,and 71 occurrence relations.(2)Disease names:The top three by scores were Bu Neng Yuan Shi(6.18 scores),Neng Jin Shi(5.10 scores)and Mu Bu Neng Yuan Shi(1.63).(3)Etiology and pathomechanism:The top three etiological nodes were Bing Shou Sheng Cheng(congenital/constitutional insufficiency,0.62 scores),Jiu Shi Shang Jing(prolonged visual strain impairing the eyes,0.28 scores),and Zhuan Bao Shang Jing and Xu Lao Mu An(both 0.27 scores).The top three pathomechanism nodes by PageRank score were Yang Qi Bu Zu(insufficiency of Yang Qi,5.94 scores),Gan Xu(liver deficiency,1.66 scores),and Yuan Qi Bu Zu,Yin Huo You Yu(insufficiency of primordial Qi with exuberant Yin fire,both 1.01 scores).(4)Therapeutic methods and formulas:The top three by scores were Yang Xin Yi Zhi(nourishing heart and boosting intellect,3.59 scores),Bu Yi Gan Shen(replenishing liver and kidney,2.32 scores),and Wen Yang Yi Qi(warming Yang and supplementing Qi,1.34 scores).(5)Acupuncture and moxibustion:The knowledge graph included three acupoints,ranked in descending order of importance as Muchuang(GB16),Cuanzhu(BL2),and Zusanli(ST36).(6)Spectacle correction,other nursing and contraindications:Ancient books recorded wearing spectacles to correct myopia under the nursing section,as well as dietary therapies such as Zhu Gan Geng(pork liver soup),Cong Zi Zhou(semen Allii fistulosi porridge),and Yang Gan Zhou(sheep liver porridge),together with ocular Daoyin(guiding-and-pulling)exercises.In addition,moderation in eye use was advised;Overstrain,alcohol indulgence,anger,and excessive worrying were listed as contraindications.CONCLUSIONS Ancient TCM books hold that the etiology of myopia includes congenital insufficiency and acquired prolonged visual strain impairing the eyes,with the main pathomechanisms being insufficiency of Yang Qi and liver deficiency.The dominant therapeutic principles are nourishing the heart and boosting intellect and replenishing liver and kidney,embodying the thinking of simultaneously supplementing Qi and blood and coordinating heart,liver,and kidney.关键词
