Advances in the Pharmacological Treatment of Wet Age-related Macular Degenera-tion:A Comparative Study of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine

Abstract
Age-related macular degeneration(AMD)is a prevalent ocular disease leading to visual impairment in the elderly,with a high rate of blindness.It has become one of the key focus areas for blindness prevention and treatment in our country.With ongoing research,significant ad-vancements have been made in the pharmacological treatments of wet AMD within both Tradi-tional Chinese Medicine(TCM)and Western Medicine(WM).This paper provides a review of the progress in pharmacological therapies for wet AMD by summarizing relevant literature,both do-mestic and international.It was found that Western pharmacological treatments primarily include anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and other cytokine agents,bispecific antibodies,biosimi-lars,gene therapy,and long-acting medicine delivery systems.However,these treatments continue to face challenges such as lengthy treatment durations,high costs,elevated rates of recurrence,and the lack of response in certain patients.TCM approaches to treating this condition largely fo-cus on the harmonious balance among liver,kidney,and spleen,highlighting the importance of syndromic differentiation and tailored therapies.Despite this,there remains a scarcity of large-sample,multi-center randomized controlled trials to provide robust evidence.Compared to mono-therapy,integrative treatment combining TCM and WM has demonstrated superior clinical effi-cacy,showing potential advantages in enhancing patients'best-corrected visual acuity,reducing the frequency of intravitreal injections,delaying disease progression,and lowering treatment costs.This integrative approach may offer new insights and additional options for the clinical treatment of wet AMD.关键词
