Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical characteristics, etiology, preventive measures, and treatment options for delayed facial palsy following middle ear mastoid surgery, and to provide a reference for reducing the incidence of this complication and improving patient outcomes.METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 12 patients who developed delayed facial palsy after tympanomastoid surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Science and Technology and the Eye&ENT Hospital of Fudan University from March 2006 to December 2025.The onset time, clinical manifestations, treatment modalities, and prognosis were summarized, and the related risk factors were analyzed.RESULTS Delayed facial palsy occurred between 6 and 14 days postoperatively.Severity was mainly mild to moderate(House-Brackmann grades II and III),with some patients experiencing ipsilateral taste disturbance. After conservative treatments including corticosteroids, neurotrophic agents, and physiotherapy, all patients recovered completely within 6 to 20 days.CONCLUSION Delayed facial palsy following middle ear mastoid surgery is multifactorial, predominantly presenting as mild to moderate incomplete facial palsy.Early recognition and standardized conservative treatment lead to favorable outcomes.Preoperative evaluation, meticulous intraoperative manipulation, and appropriate use of packing materials and disinfectants are key to prevention.关键词
