Reading under the Digital Gaze:A Sartrean Critique of Freedom's Dissolution and Transcendence

Abstract
The widespread adoption of the"read receipt"feature in digital communication,while enhancing informational efficiency,has concurrently triggered pervasive social anxiety and a crisis of subjective freedom.Drawing upon Sartre's theory of the gaze,this study conceptualizes the read receipt as a technologically mediated digital gaze that,through mechanisms of forced visibility,asymmetrical power relations,and objectification,reduces the individual from a state of being-for-itself to that of being-in-itself,thereby undermining temporal projection and existential freedom.Employing word frequency analysis and sentiment analysis on user comments harvested from social media platforms,the study empirically substantiates the negative experiential responses induced by the read receipt feature,revealing its erosive impact on freedom in social interaction.To achieve technological redemption,two complementary pathways are proposed:at the individual level,users are called upon to reclaim temporal autonomy and practice authentic self-expression with Sartrean resolve;at the design level,technological architectures should subvert surveillance logic by restoring control over read receipt settings to the message recipient and introducing non-binary status indicators to accommodate temporal planning.Ultimately,anchoring the principle that existence precedes essence in technological ethics offers a vital safeguard against the digital gaze's encroachment upon the very foundations of freedom.关键词
