The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Strategic Narratives on Corporate Innovation Quality

Abstract
Against the backdrop of artificial intelligence being elevated to a national strategy,corporate strategic narratives concerning artificial intelligence have become increasingly prevalent,yet such narratives do not necessarily develop in step with technological progress.Using data on non-financial A-share listed firms in China from 2016 to 2024,this paper measures strategic narratives using the frequency of artificial intelligence-related terms in the Management Discussion and Analysis sections of annual reports and technological foundations using firms'artificial intelligence patents.A conditional narrative equation is employed to iden-tify"excessive AI narrative"and"insufficient AI narrative"and to examine the effects of corporate artificial intelligence strategic narratives on innovation quality and the underlying mechanisms.The findings show that:(1)excessive AI narrative significantly reduces future innovation quality,whereas insufficient AI narrative has no significant average effect,indicating a clear directional asymmetry;these findings remain robust to a range of checks and peer-group instrumental-variable estimation;(2)patent quanti-ty expansion and artificial intelligence patent-investment mismatch constitute two significant channels through which excessive AI narrative undermines innovation quality;(3)the innovation consequences of insufficient AI narrative are contingent on firm size and the negative media environment.This study provides empirical evidence for identifying deviations between strategic expression and actual technological capabilities,improving the regulation of corporate artificial intelligence disclosure,and enhancing corpo-rate innovation quality.关键词
