Does Smart Manufacturing Promote Technological Innovation?Evidence from the Application of Industrial Robots in China

Abstract
The new technological revolution,which is basically characterized by digitization and intelligence,has promoted the rapid development of technological innovation,thereby constituting the core elements of the new quality productive forces.Meanwhile,it has also become the principal driving force to promote economic and social transformation as well as high-quality development.Based on the micro perspective of robot application in Chinese enterprises,this paper investigates the impact of enterprise industrial intelligence on technological innovation and its mechanism by constructing a theoretical model of enterprise innovation that includes an intelligent parameter.Accordingly,the relevant theoretical inferences and research hypotheses are empirically tested by using a panel data of listed companies in China's A-share market from 2007 to 2022.This study finds an inverted"U"shaped relationship between industrial intelligence and technological innovation of enterprises.The relationship is still valid after a series of robustness tests,such as replacing key variables,changing the estimation method and applying the instrumental variables.Further,the study shows that industrial intelligence has a significant inverted"U"shaped effect on strategic innovation,but not on substantive innovation.In addition,heterogeneity analyses show that the non-linear relationship is more significant for firms that are environmentally friendly,non-capital intensive,and located in the eastern region.This paper also finds that the non-linear relationship between enterprise industrial intelligence and technological innovation is more pronounced in industries with lower com-petition,regions with stronger intellectual property protection and areas with better business environ-ment.The mechanism tests suggest that industrial intelligence of enterprises will induce technological innovation to firstly increase and then decrease through financing facilitation,labor replacement,and government subsidies,which provides evidence to support the theoretical analyses.The conclusions from the above analyses provide theoretical evidence for the top-level design of macro policies.关键词
