Industrial Robots and the Mobility Opportunities of Rural Migrant Workers

Abstract
Using data from the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey(CLDS)for 2012,2014,and 2016 and industrial robot data provided by the International Federation of Robotics(IFR),this paper defines rural migrant workers' mobility opportunities as the likelihood of entering or remaining in urban employment and measures them by the share of employed rural migrant workers in the urban employed population.We examine the impact of industrial robot adoption on rural migrant workers' mobility opportunities.The results show that industrial robot adoption significantly reduces rural migrant workers' mobility opportunities,making it more difficult for them to enter or remain in urban employment.Mechanism analysis indicates that industrial robots exhibit clear skill-biased and task-biased characteristics,increasing the relative demand for high-skilled workers while reducing the relative demand for workers primarily engaged in routine-task-intensive occupations.We further examine the effects of industrial robot adoption on rural migrant workers' urban settlement and migration destinations.The results show that industrial robot adoption does not increase the likelihood of rural migrant workers obtaining urban household registration(hukou),and that rural migrant workers affected by industrial robot adoption tend to migrate primarily to first-tier and new first-tier cities.关键词
