Research on Carthamus tinctorius L.,a Local Medicinal Herb in Ningxia,Based on Local Chronicles and Relevant Historical Materials

Abstract
To clarify the historical records of the production of Carthamus tinctorius L.in Ningxia in local chronicles and historical materials of previous dynasties,31 local chronicles of Ningxia(compiled into 16 volumes)and 10 related historical materials from the Ming,Qing,and Republic of China periods were systematically collected.The results showed that according to the records in the Yuanhe County Atlas,Carthamus tinctorius L.was produced in Ningxia during the Tang Dynasty during the Kaiyuan period and was used as a tribute item,dating back over 1,300 years;the cultivation of Carthamus tinctorius L.in Ningxia hads continued from the Tang Dynasty to the Yuan,Ming,Qing and Republic of China periods,and has persisted to this day.The main production area of Carthamus tinctorius L.in the Tang Dynasty was located in the central part of Ningxia;in the Yuan Dynasty,large-scale cultivation was established,and the main production area shifted to the central-northern part of Ningxia;in the Ming Dynasty,the production area still remained in the central-northern part of Ningxia,and the Carthamus tinctorius L.produced in both the Tang and Ming Dynasties was all presented as tributes to the imperial court;since the Qing Dynasty,the cultivation area of Carthamus tinctorius L.has further expanded to the southern part of Ningxia.Before the Qing Dynasty,the Carthamus tinctorius L.produced in Ningxia was mainly used for dyeing purposes,while since the Qing Dynasty,Carthamus tinctorius L.has had dual uses as both a dye and a medicinal material.The research results aim to provide historical evidence for the rational utilization of local chronicles of Ningxia and the history of tribute of Carthamus tinctorius L.,the planting history,the identification of the authentic production areas,and the development and utilization of Carthamus tinctorius L.in Ningxia.关键词
