The Formation Mechanism of Women's Caution toward Marriage and Childbearing in the Context of Low Fertility:An Analysis Based on the Marriage and Childbearing Risk Chain

Abstract
Against the backdrop of low fertility,the construction of a positive outlook on marriage and childbearing needs to respond to the reality that young people's attitudes toward marriage and childbearing.For women,marriage and childbearing involve intimate relationships,reproductive risks,family responsibilities,care arrangements,and career development.Many concerns do not emerge only when getting marriage and having children,but accumulate during relationship entry and in anticipations of marriage and childbearing.Based on semi-structured interviews with 75 and 90s famale participants conducted in Guangdong Province in 2025,this article proposes the framework of the"risk chain of marriage and childbearing".It examines how women anticipate,assess,and respond to marriage-and childbearing-related risks in the continuous relational practices of social interaction,romantic relationships,marriage,and childbearing.The study finds that women's caution toward marriage and childbearing is formed within a risk chain that interlinks the relationships,love,marriage,and childbearing.The relational experiences in an earlier stage affect later judgments about marriage and childbearing,while possible marital responsibilities,childbearing consequences,and developmental pressures in later stages also enter present choices in advance.Within this chain,risks are transmitted across different stages and extend from their original sites to the bodily,emotional,familial,and occupational domains.At the same time,under an unequal gender division of labor,the risk consequences in each stage are more likely to concentrate on women.When partner sharing,family resources,workplace institutions,and public services are insufficient,marriage-and childbearing-related risks are more likely to turn into women's defensive assessments of marriage and childbearing.For a positive outlook on marriage and childbearing to gain a realistic foundation,it is necessary to form support in terms of expectation formation,responsibility sharing,risk response,and institutional coordination,so as to safeguard women's developmental continuity and make marriage and childbearing life arrangements that can provide intimate support,mutual growth,and development space.关键词
