Evaluation of strength criteria for passive earth pressure in finite soil masses
摘要
Abstract
To evaluate the applicability of different strength criteria for calculating the passive earth pressure of finite-width soil masses,a calculation model for the passive earth pressure of finite-width cohesionless soil is developed using the horizontal differential element method.Based on this model, passive earth pressure is analyzed using four strength criteria:the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the spatially mobilized plane(SMP)criterion, the Lade-Duncan criterion, and the generalized Mises criterion. The accuracy of the proposed model is validated through comparison with laboratory test results. Results show that the passive earth pressure in finite soil masses exhibits a typical nonlinear distribution with depth. At a given depth, the passive earth pressure increases with the increase of the internal friction angle and the decrease in the width-to-height ratio of the soil mass. The Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion yields conservative predictions because the effect of the intermediate principal stress is neglected. In contrast, the SMP and Lade-Duncan strength criteria, which account for the intermediate principal stress, produce predictions that agree more closely with the experimental results. The generalized Mises strength criterion performs well for soils with small internal friction angles, but it is not suitable when the internal friction angle exceeds 30°.This study provides theoretical basis for the rational selection of strength criteria in the design of retaining structures involving finite soil masses for practical geotechnical engineering.关键词
