Understanding the Collective Rise of the Global South through the Logic of the World Market
摘要
Abstract
Since the formation of the capitalist world market,its operation has been characterized by a structural property this article terms"unidirectionality":while production and exchange expanded globally,the creation,realization,and retention of value have long been governed by the Global North's structural power monopoly across three interlocking dimensions—production,market,and finance—trapping Southern countries in a condition of structural blockage of autonomous accumulation.Driven at its core by Chinese modernization,the development of the Global South is now generating a historic shift in the structural power of the world market.What distinguishes the contemporary collective rise of the Global South from every previous hegemonic transition since the West's ascendancy is that industrial capacity has for the first time shifted geographically outside the North,value flows have begun circulating laterally across Southern economies,and alternative institutions that safeguard the development interests of Southern countries have been established within the existing world market system.The hierarchical structure of the world market remains far from overturned,yet the mechanisms sustaining its unidirectionality are undergoing discernible changes,as value circulation begins its gradual reorientation from"unidirectional periphery-to-center extraction"toward"multi-directional networked circulation".The ideal order of equality,autonomy,and shared development,long pursued by the Global South,is now acquiring an increasingly solid material foundation.关键词
