Living Together and Thriving Together:Mao Zedong's Discourse on"the Great Family of the Chinese Nation"

Abstract
Mao Zedong's discourse on the great family of the Chinese nation reflects the historical process of adapting Marxist ethnic theory to the Chinese context and embodies a holistic understanding of the Chinese nation.Previous studies have predominantly examined the Communist Party of China as the research subject,emphasizing contemporary value interpretation,while relatively neglecting the historical origins and core logic of Mao Zedong's individual discourse.Employing the method of document analysis,this study examines the historical context of Mao's discourse.It argues that this discourse inherited the historical legacy of the traditional Chinese ideal of"Great Unity",encompassing the principles of territorial unity and jiaguotianxia(the interconnectedness of family,state,and land),while simultaneously integrating the fundamental Marxist principles of ethnic equality and the unity and solidarity of ethnic groups.By dissecting the internal logic linking the concepts of the"Chinese nation","family",and"the great family of the Chinese nation",this study argues that Mao Zedong transcended a narrow conception of ethnicity and developed a holistic understanding of the Chinese nation.Drawing upon the governance philosophy of the isomorphism of family and state,he established the"great family"as the core status for fostering a shared identity and emotional belonging among all ethnic groups in coexistence and co-prosperity,thereby demonstrating its distinctive value as a foundational theoretical construct.This study finds that this discourse has laid a profound ideological foundation for fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation in the new era.In the new era,this discourse should be utilized as a significant theoretical resource by upholding ethnic equality,promoting extensive interethnic exchanges,interactions,and integration,and encouraging all ethnic groups to remain as closely united as the seeds of a pomegranate,thereby providing both theoretical support and practical guidance for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.关键词
