From"Literati"to"Confucian":On the Background and Logic of Han Yu's Construction of Yang Xiong's Confucian Scholar Image

Abstract
Han Yu regarded Yang Xiong as an"outstanding figure",with"outstanding figure"in this context referring to Yang Xiong's steadfast commitment to the Confucian orthodoxy.Han Yu's original intention was to praise Yang Xiong as a Confucian scholar.Han Yu's comment was particularly distinctive in its time,as Tang Dynasty scholars typically evaluated individuals from the perspective of literary merit.Yang Xiong had long been regarded as an exceptional literary figure,and this emphasis on literary criteria stemmed from the political and cultural milieu of the Tang Dynasty,which held literature in high esteem.However,Han Yu prioritized the orthodoxy as the fundamental principle,reconstructing the relationships among the orthodoxy,literature,and individuals.He believed that all people possess inherent nature,and human nature inherently inclines toward the orthodoxy,with the orthodoxy serving as the prerequisite for literature.Therefore,he advocated the Confucian orthodoxy and endeavored to portray the image of outstanding scholars as transmitters of the orthodoxy,thus transforming Yang Xiong into a Confucian scholar.Han Yu's proposition was rooted in the shifting intellectual and cultural landscape among scholars since the mid-eighth century.At that time,the literati were caught in the anxiety over societal issues and personal fate.They discerned the connection between literary expression and governance,and under the noble cause of improving society,they focused on the pursuit of the orthodoxy.This initiated a cultural and intellectual shift centered on the orthodoxy,giving rise to the practice of evaluating scholars based on the orthodoxy.关键词
